There are many perks about being a teacher and one of them is creating new things you never thought you could do. One of the easiest things to make are Soy votive candles. You don’t need many resources for this project because it only requires five inexpensive items to buy.
Here are the materials needed:
1 pound of soy wax per large candle
1-2 ounces of fragrance
A glass container for the melted wax
Colored wax dye
Cotton wicks
Glass Votive Holder
As soon as you’ve gathered all the materials, you can now start with the procedure.
1. Place the soy wax into the saucepan and turn the heat on medium.
2. Remove from heat once melted. Pour in the fragrance oil. Constantly stir with a wooden spoon until it’s completely combined.
3. Add the wax dye and mix in (at this time, we divide it into 5 distinct containers and give each a different color).
4. Using the glass container, pour the wax in. Then place the cotton wick right in the middle. Position a spoon across the top of the jar. In this way, the wick can tilt against it making it not lose its place in the middle of the candle.
5. Allow time for the wax to completely dry off. (At this stage, wait until the bottom layer is almost dry if you want to make a multi-colored candle. Then, fill in the second layer, wait till it’s dry and add the third layer and so on).
6. My kids did a funky colored one and so can you. Just pour all the different colored waxes in together. It looks really awesome because of the blended colors.
7. Let the soy votive candles dry for the night then cut the wick in an inch length.
Kids will surely enjoy making this project because they can fully participate except for the hot wax part. They can add the fragrance, colors and carry out the stirring. Just be careful when handling the hot wax because your skin might sting a little with a tiny drop though it doesn’t cause major harm.
One important thing to remember when heating the wax: constant stirring is a must. The wax tends to get too hot when unsupervised and will become useless when burned.
We have used common fragrance oils such as lemongrass, ginger, lily, mangosteen and jasmine. Use these depending on if you want scented or unscented votive candles. You can choose from a hundred more, whichever suits your taste. Regardless, enjoy your new cheap soy votive candles!
